Drawing on Federico García Lorca's own unfinished play La bola negra and playwright Alberto Conejero's acclaimed theatrical work La piedra oscura, imagining Lorca's final days, this ambitious multigenerational drama traces the intertwined lives of three gay men across three distinct eras of twentieth and twenty-first century Spain. Their individually rendered stories, connected through recurring themes of sexuality, desire, pain and inherited legacy, are brought together by directing duo Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, known collectively as Los Javis, in a sweeping meditation on what it has meant to live as a gay man in Spain across a century of change.
Review:
A sweeping, ambitious multigenerational epic that finds real emotional resonance across its interlocking timelines, deservedly recognised with the Best Director prize at Cannes.
