In a remote Nepalese village bordering dense forests populated by wild elephants, Pirati serves as matriarch of a Kinnar (eunuch) community bound together by tradition and mutual responsibility. When her daughter Apsara vanishes into the surrounding forest, Pirati is forced to reconcile the demands of community duty and tradition with her own long-suppressed desire for a different, freer life, the search for Apsara surfacing urgent questions of identity, femininity, family and belonging, in director Abinash Bikram Shah's feature debut, winner of the Jury Prize in Cannes' Un Certain Regard section.
Review:
A striking, thematically rich debut that uses its elemental Nepalese setting to interrogate identity and tradition with real formal confidence, deservedly recognised at Cannes.
