Synopsis:
Patrick, a politically opinionated food delivery courier, lives with his high-school-sweetheart wife Shiv and their two young daughters on an inner-city estate, their neighbours including Oli, a loveable goofball dealing heroin to make ends meet, and Conor, whose drinking intensifies as his pregnant wife nears her due date while he oversees a high-rise construction project meant to change his family's fortunes. Crucial investment for that project comes from Rian, the only member of the group to have broken away from Birmingham and built real wealth. As adulthood closes in around all five, old dreams collide with harder realities, testing a friendship shaped since childhood against the pressures of Britain's ongoing housing crisis.
Review:
A textbook example of how strong casting lifts every element of a film, its five up-and-coming leads delivering outstanding, richly layered performances even where the drama occasionally feels too neatly diagrammatic in signalling where it is headed.
