Synopsis:
For 30 years, Dr Loran Bonnardot, a French physician who has worked around the world, has travelled to Tristan da Cunha, a tiny volcanic island in the middle of the South Atlantic and the most remote inhabited place on earth, home to a close-knit community of a few hundred people living by fishing and farming. Now 50, he decides to settle there for good. Shipping out his belongings, piano included, he sets about earning permanent residency, which requires a year among the islanders and the approval of their council. As his friend Martin and the community weigh up whether he belongs, Loran is forced to confront what his lifelong yearning for solitude really means.
Review:
Moving between documentary, fiction and dream, this unusual Swiss film follows its own co-director as he tries to turn a romantic fantasy of escape into a new life at the edge of the world. The island's dramatic volcanic landscapes are strikingly photographed, and archive footage of the islanders' evacuation to England after an eruption in 1961 neatly punctures the idea that they live cut off from modern life. Its central figure remains something of an enigma, though, and one critic found his motives hard to believe and some clearly staged scenes jarring. A quietly absorbing, often beautiful meditation on belonging and the limits of escape.
