Soraya, a talented young artist, co-directed the film with her uncle, the veteran Iranian documentary-maker Mehrdad Oskouei, who guided her remotely. Her phone footage, shot over half a decade, shows the dangers and humiliations of attempting to cross borders with the help of smugglers, and the domestic violence she suffers in her marriage to Ali. Her drawings, sculptures and collages, brought to life through animation by Mohammad Lotfali, offer a surreal, colourful window into her inner world, her hopes and her fears. The result is a raw self-portrait of a young woman's resilience in the face of displacement.
Review:
A Fox Under a Pink Moon is a raw, emotionally charged self-portrait that avoids the familiar tone of a grim issue documentary, thanks to Soraya's charisma and the vivid, surreal artwork that runs through it. The structure is episodic, and some context is thin, but it is a powerful and original film about exile and survival.
