The documentary follows the negotiation between Tahereh and her in-laws, as she and those helping her try to secure their forgiveness, and the family weigh their grief, anger and the sum they might accept. Filmed in Iran, it offers a rare view of a legal system in which victims' families decide whether a convicted person lives or dies, and of the human emotions involved on both sides. Directed by Tanaz Eshaghian, whose earlier documentaries include Be Like Others, and Farzad Jafari.
Review:
An Eye for an Eye has been widely praised for telling a difficult story with honesty and compassion, with critics calling it one of the best documentaries of the year. It is a tense, morally complex and deeply human film about justice, forgiveness and the value placed on a life.
